Matthew McConaughey had to work hard at being cool. To get people’s attention in Hollywood, he couldn’t just let a fancy red sports car do the work. He had to be fun and engaging.
Before McConaughey was an actor, he was in film school. But he realized that grades were less important than experience. Signing with a talent agency required skipping school sometimes. He knew that he’d never get famous sitting in class.
McConaughey met his first movie producer, Don Phillips, drinking at a bar one night. Having bonded over golf and vodka soda, Phillips invited him to audition for a small part in one of his movies. That evening led to McConaughey’s famous first role in Dazed and Confused.
