A Pop Star’s Secret Struggles

Mariah Carey is one of the most successful recording artists of all time. But there was a time in childhood when she didn’t believe that she was worthy of being alive.

Carey’s experiences with racism marked her since she was a little girl. In kindergarten, when she was tasked with drawing a family portrait, her teachers laughed when they saw that she’d drawn her father in brown crayon. Carey was humiliated.

Singing was Carey’s favorite form of escape. She found joy in using her voice, which helped her imagine she was someone else. To this day, she enjoys escaping to a private vocal booth to shut out the demands of life.

Carey wrote The Meaning of Mariah to finally emancipate the scared little girl inside of her. Learn more about her story in today’s Instaread.
