After he was elected, Lincoln made his way to the White House on a special train. He was in disguise β a worn overcoat, a flamboyant hat, and a shawl β that was intended to thwart potential assassins. Telegraph lines were cut along the way to prevent leaks. The plan worked, though the state of Texas left the Union on the day of Lincoln’s arrival.
