Most businesses begin with ideas about products and services. But often, during the development process, too much emphasis is placed on product features.
The product is important, of course. But it should always be secondary to your business objectives.
With the right objectives in place, the product team will have its marching orders. They will be able to work out the best approach to solving issues and improving products. They’ll be better able to deploy resources and develop timetables. And the final product is more likely to meet a high standard while also coming in on time and under budget.
To make sure you’re setting excellent goalposts, differentiate between normal objectives and critical deadlines. And always define quantifiable outcomes so everyone knows where they stand. Remember the old adage: What gets measured gets managed.
