What stereotypes are costing you

Did you know you have a blind spot in each eye? It’s a small area where the optic nerve attaches to the retina. Your brain fills in the missing visual info so that you don’t notice the gap in your vision. As we go through our days, our brains use stereotypes in much the same way.

Stereotypes are often subconscious, and they can even affect people who consciously try to reject them. Gender bias is a good example. Research has shown that, despite claiming no preference for the gender of their boss, job seekers have a bias towards working for male bosses. They were even willing to forgo significant salary for a male boss, a bias that was fully in their blind spot. What are your unconscious biases costing you
