What it’s like to be poor

Stephanie Land’s life changed forever when she wrote her first memoir, Maid, and the adaptation blew up on Netflix. But before any of that happened, she struggled horribly as a single mother with an abusive ex. Her second book, Class, tells that story — and it isn’t always pretty.

Found Family

Perhaps the biggest drain on Stephanie’s life was the severe scoliosis that made her back hurt. But she found a surprising level of relief from her chronic back pain when she discovered the transformative power of rock climbing. As her physical strength improved, the pain lessened. She also found community with other rock climbers, who embraced Stephanie and her daughter. For the first time, she experienced a real sense of belonging.
