How Important is the Age Gap?

Speculation has already started regarding whether or not 79-year-old Joe Biden will run for reelection in 2024.

Age is a big issue in US politics, with older politicians on both sides struggling to connect with young voters.

The gap may be widening. In 2020, the average American was 38 years old, whereas the average age of a US senator was 65. Young people increasingly blame the gerontocracy for the country’s problems, and have had high expectations for dramatic change.

The age gap has resurfaced in headlines in recent weeks, with concerns swirling around the mental fitness of Senator Dianne Feinstein, who is 88. Then a leaked memo revealed that Bernie Sanders, who is 80, might run for the Democratic nomination in 2024 if Biden decides to retire.
